"Aviator's Holiday"
"Aviator's Holiday" is an intaglio etching made with press-on letters. Before computers with all their different fonts and type sizes, we used press-on letters to make professional looking documents. I wanted to see if they would act as an acid resist...and they did. The buidings and even the biplane (seen in the cloud) are made with press-on numbers and letters. Where the letters were old, they cracked and took on the appearance of decaying cement. The edition size is 150 and the image size is 5 7/8 x 8 7/8. It is usually printed in black for the most effect. It is printed on Rives BFK printmaking paper. The plate was made in 1970, the same year I went to visit M.C. Escher in Holland. Recently, someone mentioned that there were two towers and a plane; an obvious reference to 9/11.
